Discussion 2: Language and Cognition

“He never learned to speak more than a few words, but he developed some sensitivity to sounds and mastered table manners and polite comportment.” (Douthwaite, 2002, p. 21)Here, Douthwaite describes historical accounts of a feral child discovered in Germany and taken in to live out his life under the care of “civilized” keepers. Psychologists and neurologists have long devoted attention to cases of “wild children,” those who begin maturation outside of human society, with little or no human contact. Cases involving such children inform understanding of the cognitive processes inherent to language development. Consider how the effects of environmental deprivation compare to the effects of deafness on the development of language. Another influence on language production and comprehension is neurological disruption.  For example, strokes—brain damage due to blockage of blood supply or hemorrhage—have helped to differentiate important sites in the brain, as well as their functional implications. For this Discussion, consider influences of environmental deprivation, deafness, and neurological disruption on language acquisition, production, and comprehension.Reference:Douthwaite, J. V. (2002). The wild girl, natural man, and the monster: Dangerous experiments in the age of enlightenment. Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press. With these thoughts in mind:Post an explanation of how environmental deprivation, deafness, and neurological disruption (e.g., stroke or brain injury) might influence language acquisition, production, or comprehension. Provide examples for each to support your response.Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific scholarly references and resourcesto the Learning Resources.

Reply 4-1 AB

Reply to:Late selection is a perceptual system first processes all inputs equally and then selection takes place at higher stages of information processing that determine whether the stimuli gain access to awareness, are encoded in memory, or initiate a response” (Gazzaniga et al., 2019). The filtering happens at this stage, where only the relevant stimulus will be sent to the higher levels of processing for the formation of memories, awareness, and a cognitive or physical response (Gazzaniga et al., 2019).For example, a person standing in a crowded room would theoretically hear every conversation, and receive visual input from everything in their field of vision. Early selection models of attention are defined by the textbook as “the idea that a stimulus could be selected for further processing or be tossed out as irrelevant before perceptual analysis of the stimulus is complete” (Gazzaniga et al., 2019). This might occur in situations where an individual is primed to listen for a specific sound, or is expecting to hear words in a conversation. The prioritization of stimuli in this model is believed to be dictated by a top-down mechanism where the perception has already been formulated about what kind of information will be useful or pertinent for processing (Gazzaniga et al., 2019). Early selection mechanisms of attention influence the processing of sensory inputs before the completion of perceptual analysis, compared to late selection mechanisms of attention, which would only act after complete perceptual processing of the sensory inputs, at stages where the information had been recorded as a somatic or a categorical representation (Gazzaniga et al., 2019).

Statistics Project, Part 3

As you get closer to the final project in Week 6, you should have a better idea of the role of statistics in research. This week, you will calculate a one-way ANOVA for the independent groups. Reading and interpreting the output correctly is highly important. Most people who read research articles never see the actual output or data; they read the results statements by the researcher, which is why your summary must be accurate.Consider your hypothesis statements you created in Part 2.Calculate a one-way ANOVA, including a Tukey’s HSD for the data from the Happiness and Engagement Dataset.Write a 125- to 175-word summary of your interpretation of the results of the ANOVA, and describe how using an ANOVA was more advantageous than using multiple t tests to compare your independent variable on the outcome. Copy and paste your Microsoft® Excel® output below the summary.

First, please take the following personality assessment (The Big 5): https://openpsychometrics.org/tests/IPIP-BFFM/

First, please take the following personality assessment (The Big 5):https://openpsychometrics.org/tests/IPIP-BFFM/The Big Five Personality assessment is arguably the most widely accepted measure of personality broken into smaller subscales (OCEAN; Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism**). These traits are neither good nor bad, and everyone lands on a continuum on the 5 subscales. Answer the following questions on the Big 5 (and the personality chapter in Rathus):After reading the descriptions of your traits how well do you feel they fit your personality? What aspects of the test do not work as well? How does the Big 5 differ from the other personality theories discussed in your text (psychoanalytic theory; humanistic theory; Big 3; etc). Compare/contrast the Big 5 traits with one other personality theory mentioned in your text. What aspects of personality does the Big 5 overlook? Would you add anything else as a subscale? Finally, take a look at these researchers’ explanations regarding neuroticism as “mental noise.” How does “mental noise” differ from the Big 5 definition of neuroticism?https://digest.bps.org.uk/2019/04/01/trait-neuroticism-as-mental-noise-neurotic-people-have-noisier-more-chaotic-minds-say-researchers/
